Become Wealthy by Giving Things Away

Becoming Wealthy by Giving Things Away

By Bakari Akil II, Ph.D.

One of the best ways to feel good about yourself really quickly is to give something of value to someone. I am not talking about giving away your prized possessions, but items that are no longer useful to you or essential to your life.

Remember that old saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Well the same applies to all (or most) of our possessions. There are many things of value that we possess that other people may want or need. By giving it to them, or a Goodwill or Salvation Army, it allows them to obtain it free of charge or at little cost. This allows people who may be struggling the opportunity to put their resources towards something else.

Recently, my wife and I moved into a new home and before we had time to let the dust settle we had a party for our family. With many of our boxes still packed (and hidden from view) we were missing a few items from our kitchen. Our sister-in-law, noticing this, brought over a brand new set of dish towels, dish cloths, oven mitts and an oven pad so that the food could be prepared with greater ease and we didn’t have to go scrambling through boxes to find our stuff. It really was a pleasant, thoughtful and needed gift; and she had it “lying” around her house.

How many of us have items just “lying” around our apartments or homes. Things we no longer need but others would love to have. That old bike, that scientific calculator (that can cost over $100), books, furniture, toys, video games, nice clothes (some never worn) and the list goes on.

By giving to someone a magical process occurs. The receiver of the good will most likely give something they have of value away, but no longer need, in the future. You will demonstrate to yourself that there is abundance in this life (and you are the giver) and you will feel great helping someone else out.

When you clear out your space and give things away your world opens up for other items of great value to enter and the world is truly a better place. Also you will begin to understand (if you don’t already) that a gratifying aspect of being wealthy is giving to others and helping them to improve their situations. Only a wealthy person can do that through the giving of their time, money or material possessions.

Very thoughtful post. Mindful giving can do so much to help us. It’s a much neglected part of “self-improvement,” which can be rather self-focused.

  2. Thanks Barry….

It is very helpful to one’s psyche. It’s easy to do and doesn’t take too much time.

  3. Bakari,

I like the idea of giving. I does make you feel good. When you start giving you want to continue giving and you want to give more. After reading your story I feel motivated!

  4. Thank you!

You are right, giving does make you “feel good.” I am glad that my article made such an impression.

  5. Thank you

  6. No problem…

  7. I was trying to decide whether to sell or give away the things I didn’t need in my house. Your article has inspired me to give my things away to those who need them more. Thank you for your words of wisdom.

  8. Thanks for the kind words.
